during a workshop for photographers at the

The workshop addresses every aspect of book publishing, from editing and writing, to layout and design, to manufacturing and marketing. In collaboration with instructors Sam Abell, Leah Bendavid-Val, and Mim Adkins, participants turn their work into book prototypes, employing a wide variety of storytelling and production techniques.

Using the materials brought to the workshop, including photographs and text (manuscripts, journals, notes, ephemera, etc.), daily sessions are devoted to refining each body of work and moving it toward book production. The end result is a 10- to 12-page assembled prototype of a book-to-be, showing basic layout, design, and text treatment.

Sam Abell is a gifted and insightful teacher and world-reknown photographer working for National Geographic since 1969. His latest book, The Photographic Life, features his best personal and professional work.

Leah Bendavid-Val is Editorial Director of National Geographic Insight Books. She has authored four books on photography and has curated photography exhibitions for the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. and the Pushkin Museum, Moscow.

Mim Adkins is a graphic designer, photographer, writer, and teacher. In addition to her own photographic projects, she specializes in consulting photographers on web site design and book design.
